How to Audition For Your First Teaching Gig

It’s pretty scary to apply for your first instructor job if you are new to teaching! I remember my first audition, it was a disaster! To be honest, I wasn’t selected. Here are some tips I learned along the way:

  1. Be HYPER prepared: Make sure you are able to teach an entire class confidently before you even call to ask if a gym is hiring. Because when you make that call, the manager may ask you to come in THAT SAME DAY to audition. If so could you? Make sure you are already polished and ready to go.
  2. Get some recommendations: Even if you aren’t teaching yet, you still want to have some good references you can give the manager when applying. Who can speak highly of your character? Personality and character can go a long way in terms of being hired. In fact, as a former manager myself it was way more important to me than teaching skills ever were.
  3. Don’t apologize: If you mess up during an audition, don’t apologize or make excuses for it. “Sorry this is my first time” won’t give the manager the confidence to hire you. Instead, just smile and keep going like it never happened, they may not even catch it anyway!
