I grew up in a typical Italian household. We were taught that we had to eat what was on our plate. Our portions were huge. We expressed our love through food, planed family gatherings around food, and ate TONS of pasta. So I never really had a concept of moderation, and I learned to LOVE to eat. I often ate until I was STUFFED. Has this ever happened to you? We are actually supposed to stop eating while we are still feeling comfortable, not full, because our bodies are still processing the food so it takes our brain a while to signal us that we are full. If we are constantly training our bodies to eat until we are stuffed, it can cause damage. We also learn to rely on food in a way that we become dependant and obsessive.
Signs and symptoms of compulsive overeating include:
- binge eating, or eating uncontrollably even when not physically hungry.
- eating much quicker than normal.
- eating alone due to shame, embarrassment & guilt.
- depression or mood swings.
Other than weight gain, compulsive overeating can lead to other medical conditions such as:
- high cholesterol
- heart disease
- hypertension (high blood-pressure)
- sleep apnea (temporary suspension of breathing during sleep)
Once you create the habit of overeating, it is a difficult one to break. The easiest way is to control your portion size. Our 21 Day Fix portion containers really helped me do that.
